a north-facing garden and a compulsory build-to-the-boundary on one side made daylight the central design challenge. the answer is a patio at the heart of the square, single-storey house: the central courtyard draws sunlight deep into the plan all day long and creates a bright, friendly atmosphere.

the living spaces gather around the patio, gaining light, outlook and a sheltered open space at once. built in solid brick masonry, deliberately restrained in material and proportion.
