hans, der aus der reihe tanzt

a competition entry for a hillside housing development. four cubic point blocks are rotated against one another in a diamond pattern — they 'break rank' instead of forming a rigid street edge. open space and urban space interlock, and despite their proximity the buildings neither overshadow one another nor allow direct views inside.

a shared centre

together with the surrounding tree line, the four volumes frame a green centre — a communal square for the ensemble. each building is accessed both from this square and from the street, opening to either side. via the foyers, the entire slope is made barrier-free.

construction + energy

a timber-hybrid structure with a green-glazed timber façade, built to passive-house standard. retention roofs with extensive planting and photovoltaics complete the energy concept. the strictly modular system follows a clear grid — from the underground garage to the top floor, structure and components stay interchangeable and demountable, in the spirit of the circular economy.

ensemble

four volumes with around 55 apartments — one privately financed building ('hans') and three subsidised. large triangular balconies in a bold red set a deliberate accent.
