mittelschule straßgang

a competition entry for the conversion and extension of straßgang secondary school in graz. the timber new-build attaches sensitively to the listed existing building and, together with the neighbouring primary school, forms a continuous education campus — height, plinth and building line pick up the existing structure and continue its symmetry.

the main entrance sits in the joint between old and new, a cascading stair with seating linking the two. administration and special-needs teaching stay in the existing building while all clusters move into the new one. the sunken gymnasium is roofed to become the secondary school's own grandstand schoolyard. built in prefabricated timber skeleton construction with recycled concrete — with no temporary relocation, while school carries on.
